I really don't know what to name an article with this information… mainly because someone else could post alternate rules… having multiplie pages with different information with the same or similar names might get confusing.
House rules for learning disciplines
Learning disciplines without a teacher
-A character wishing to improve their in clan disciplines without a teacher may do so at the regular experience cost ( 5 * new dot).
-A character wishing to improve an out of clan but otherwise “common” discipline (Animalism, Celerity, Obfuscate, Resilience, or Vigor ) without a teacher may raise the discipline up to the third dot but must pay double the regular experience cost (14 * new dot) to do so.
-A character wishing to purchase the first dot of Auspex, Dominate, Majesty, Nightmare, or Protean when it is not one of their in clan disciplines may do so without a teacher but must pay 14 exp to do so. They may not self train any out of clan discipline on this list above the first dot without a teacher.
-A character wishing to purchase a blood line specific discipline may not do so with or without a teacher, unless they join the blood line in question at which time it is treated as an in clan discipline.
Learning disciplines with a teacher
-A kindred (or ghoul) with a teacher may learn out of clan disciplines for regular cost (7* new dot and 14* new dot respectively).
-A kindred may act as a teacher only with regards to the levels of a discipline that they have “mastered.” A discipline level is considered “mastered” once a character learns the level above it, so a character may teach another kindred (or ghoul) any power in a discipline that they know except the last one that they have learned. A character may not teach bloodline specific disciplines to members outside of the bloodline no matter how skilled they may be.
-If a kindred knows a discipline power but has not mastered it they may attempt to teach it but due to their incomplete understanding it is more difficult to learn (10*new dot)
Learning Sorcery
-A character may choose to learn a sorcery discipline through self study. Should you choose to go this rout they will spend exp until the story teller chooses to inform them of their success. The story teller is under no obligation to allow them to ever succeed but their chances of success should greatly improve if they have in play experiences that might justify manifesting such lore. Most characters choose to save themselves the trouble of reinventing the wheel and look for a teacher.
-As a general (soft) rule, a character may not have more dots of either Theban sorcery or Cruac than their dots of covenant status in the lancia sanctum or circle of the crone (respectively.) As a general (soft) rule a character may not have more than 2 coils of the dragon per dot in covenant status they posses. Additionally, to learn the sorcery they must find a mentor in those organizations willing to teach them (it is assumed that once a character purchases the necessary status that they have a zero dot mentor willing to teach them within the limits of their soft caps, they can loose this mentor through the course of play.)
-To teach the coils of the dragon a kindred must possess more total dots in the coils of the dragon than their student. They may only teach the coils that they themselves know and may not teach the last power of the coils that they mastered. Once a character has five dots in the coils of the dragon they may perform their own research and learn coils without a teacher. Assuming that they are still a member of the covenant coils above the fifth dot are purchased at regular cost even if self trained. If they leave the covenant after learning their fifth dot of the coils of the dragon they may still self train but must pay double experience to do so as they no longer have access to the academic network of the Ordo Dracul.
-To learn a new sorcery ritual (other than the one they gain when they increase their level in a sorcery discipline) a character must find a teacher or otherwise be able to justify learning the new ritual through play. If a character “has mastered” a level of sorcery they may self teach a ritual of that level for double the experience cost with story teller approval. Rituals that are not based on Cruac or Theban sorcery such as the Ordo Dracul’s ritual magic are easier to learn with a teacher but may be self taught at double the regular experience cost if they possess the fontal ritual merit and the story teller approves that their character has justified discovering the ritual through in character actions.
